Common questions about Kayak buoyancy aids & PFDs

A kayak life jacket and a buoyancy aid are different things, and most kayakers wear a buoyancy aid. A life jacket is built to turn an unconscious person face-up, so its bulky buoyancy around the chest and neck gets in the way of paddling and re-entry. A buoyancy aid keeps a conscious paddler afloat with the arms free. Non-swimmers and young children may need a life jacket, and rules vary, so check local regulations.

The right buoyancy aid size depends on your chest measurement, not your usual jacket size. Each model lists a chest range for fit and a weight range for buoyancy, and you should fall within both. Between two sizes, the smaller one usually stays in place better once the straps are tightened, as long as you can still breathe freely.

A buoyancy aid should fit snugly without restricting your breathing. Loosen every strap, then tighten from the waist up: waist, sides, shoulders. Ask someone to pull up firmly on the shoulder straps. If the buoyancy aid rides up over your chin or ears, tighten it further or try a smaller size.

A 50N buoyancy aid keeps most adults afloat in a kayak, canoe or on a SUP, as long as it is correctly fitted and fastened. A buoyancy aid will not turn you onto your back or hold your head up, so you stay upright by leaning back and moving gently. Heavier paddlers and those heading into rough water may prefer more buoyancy, so check the weight range on the label.

A good sea kayaking buoyancy aid has a thin back panel that sits comfortably against a high seat back, large front pockets you can open with cold fingers, and attachment points for a whistle and a knife. Bright colours and reflective details make you easier to spot from another boat. Pair it with the essentials in our kayak safety gear.

Surfski and ocean racing paddlers usually choose a low-profile buoyancy aid that leaves the shoulders and torso free for a long, rotating stroke. Racing models such as the Vaikobi V4 and VXP2 are built around this, with slim foam that sits close to the body. As with any buoyancy aid, check that the weight range on the label matches you.

The same buoyancy aid usually works for kayaking, canoeing and SUP, because the buoyancy is the same and only comfort differs. Canoeists often want extra freedom over the shoulders for kneeling and switching sides, and paddleboarders a light, cool fit. Some paddleboarders on calm, sheltered water choose a slim inflatable, but a foam buoyancy aid works the moment you fall in.

Many women find a women's specific buoyancy aid more comfortable. Women's models such as the Palm Tika are cut differently across the chest and waist, so they often sit flatter and ride up less. Fit is personal, though, so try a unisex model too and choose the one that stays put when someone pulls up on the shoulder straps.

Always wear a buoyancy aid over a drysuit. A drysuit keeps you dry and warm, but it is not a flotation device and never replaces a buoyancy aid. Try the buoyancy aid on over the layers you will actually wear under your drysuit, and make sure the side straps leave room to adjust. A buoyancy aid that only just closes over a summer top will be too small in winter.

A buoyancy aid should be replaced when the foam stays compressed or feels stiff, the fabric is torn, the seams have opened, or buckles and zips no longer hold. Check it at the start of each season. Rinsing it in fresh water after salt water and drying it in the shade helps it last longer.
