Description
Traditional paddle type from the Aleutian Islands northwest of Alaska.
Unlike Greenland paddles, Aleutian paddles have asymmetrical blades. One side of the blade is nearly flat and works well for rolling and sculling. The other side of the blade features a raised back along the paddle's centerline. This reinforces and stiffens the paddle, allowing for more powerful strokes. The two different sides create a paddle that is both powerful and quiet.
When it comes to the length of an Aleutian paddle, it should be 10 cm longer than a Greenland paddle and up to 15 cm longer than a European paddle.
The Aleutian paddle is laminated from 7 strips of Western Red Cedar. This makes the paddle stiffer and stronger, which is particularly important for long wooden paddles.
The paddles are treated with Chinese tung oil to protect the wood and provide a pleasant and secure grip.
