A paddle grip makes a real difference when you’re climbing back into your kayak using a stirrup and a paddle float.
The grip lets you secure the paddle to the kayak, giving you a much steadier outrigger when you’re doing a self-rescue with a paddle float. Without a proper grip, many paddlers tuck the paddle under the deck lines on the rear deck. It works, but the paddle can slide back and forth as you try to re-enter — and the load on the deck lines can be high enough to stress (or damage) the deck fittings.
With a paddle grip, the paddle shaft is held firmly against the kayak and takes most of the force. The paddle blade is then slipped under the deck lines on the opposite side, helping the paddle stay put while you climb back in.
The paddle grip can be mounted in two ways: either onto a deck line, or directly onto the rear deck using through-bolts.
