A paddle float for self-rescue after a capsize.
The float stabilises your kayak and makes it easier to re-enter after you’ve ended up in the water. It provides buoyancy and slips over one paddle blade. The other blade is then placed under the deck lines, creating a stable outrigger so you can climb back in with better balance and control.
There are also inflatable paddle floats that pack down smaller, but the advantage of a foam float is that there’s nothing to inflate while you’re in the water. You simply slide it onto the blade and secure the paddle to the kayak — a small detail that often matters when you’ve just capsized.
On a touring trip, the float can also be used as a sit pad, as protection when pulling the kayak up onto land, or as a simple pillow for an overnight stop.
The Paddlespot paddle float has pockets that are accessible from both sides. Strong buckles let you secure it to the kayak’s deck lines, and the attachment points include small built-in whistles. A foam paddle float is ready to use straight away, and it’s easy to bring along by strapping it just behind the cockpit.
