Kajaksport is one of the most widely used hatch-cover brands in sea kayaking, fitted as original equipment by many kayak builders because the quality is dependable. This cover is made from two different materials, giving it a firm, supportive feel without making it awkward to pull over the rim. Compared to traditional rubber hatch covers, the big advantage is lower weight. There are attachment points for safety lines on both the inside and outside.

Please note: This type of hatch cover is primarily designed for fibreglass kayaks. If you have a rotomoulded kayak, we recommend choosing this hatch cover instead.

If you paddle a kayak from P&H, Valley, Impex or Necky, it’s common to need a different hatch cover instead — often the 19.5 cm size.

Which size should you choose?

Choosing the right hatch cover size isn’t always straightforward. The size listed for the hatch cover is not the cover’s outer diameter — even though that’s a common assumption. Instead, it refers to the size of the hatch opening on the kayak.

To get the correct fit, measure the outer diameter of the hatch rim (coaming) — the moulded lip that the hatch cover stretches over. Use this measurement to match the closest size in the size chart below. Measure carefully, as the difference between sizes can be small.

The outer dimension of hatch rim is the only reliable and fixed measurement as the hatch cover must stretch over it to seal properly — the better the match, the better the seal.

On most composite kayaks, the hatch rim is a separate component bonded to the deck. On most rotomoulded plastic kayaks, it is an integrated part of the deck itself. In both cases, it is the hatch rim’s outer diameter that determines which hatch cover size will fit, function, and seal correctly.
